Setup for the Game

To start, remove all of the face cards from the a standard deck of cards. Then deal the cards evenly to the two players so each player has 20 cards.

How to Play Multiplication War

Players count, “1,2,3.. Flip”  On flip both players flip over the top card on their pile. The players then look at the two cards and say the product of the two numbers on the card. The first player to say the product wins the cards. For example, if a 4 is flipped up by one player and a 3 from the other the player who says 12 first is the winner of that round.

When players win a round they take the cards and put them on the bottom of their pile. When both players say the product at the same time a WAR will determine the winner.  Each player will lay three playing cards face down and then will count “1,2,3.. Filp!” Again the goal is to be the first player to say the product.  The player who says the product of the flipped cards in the winner of the war. The winner takes all of the cards and places them on the bottom of their pile.

The game is over when one player has all of the cards. This game much like traditional war, can go on for hours! This is a fantastic activity to get kids practicing basic multiplication facts in a unique way.
