How to make Coffee Filter Butterflies

Create a beautiful one of kind coffee filter butterflies with just a coffee filter, pipe cleaner, markers and water and googly eyes. This simple craft activity is easy to set up and uses supplies you have on hand!

Using the markers color a coffee filters so that there is little to no white showing. Kids can make any color design they wish the more colorful the filter the better the butterfly will look.

When the coffee filters are done place them on a towel or in a sink. Then allow the kids to spray the filters with the water bottle so the colors bleed into one another. This part can get messy so towels are needed if you do not have a sink you can use for art projects. Kids will love to see how the colors run together! If you like this part of the activity you will also like coffee filter flowers. This activity uses the same coffee filter coloring technique to make unique flowers.

Place the wet coffee filters out to dry overnight, put them on a piece of paper towel or other barrier because the ink can bleed onto tabletops.

Once the filter is dry scrunch up the filter in the center and place the clothespin around it. The clothespin acts as the body of the coffee filter butterfly. Then glue two googly eyes to the clothespin and twist a pipe cleaner to look like antenna then clamp them in the clothespin. Spread out the filters to look like beautiful butterfly wings.
