Then take children on a nature walk.  This activity is great for programs close to the woods or walking trails but can be completed anywhere animals roam.  Ask kids to look at the ground, look for animal prints, or imprints from leaves, bugs or other items found in nature.

As kids begin to find imprints in the mud or dirt, take a cookie cutter and place it around the print. If the ground is soft press the cookie cutter into the ground slightly so it will stay in place. Then pour a small layer of plaster into the cookie cutter and keep walking.

It typically takes 30 -45 minutes for plaster to begin to harden. Make sure to note where each plaster item is and come back 30 minutes – 1 hour. When you return to the plaster test its consistency by touching it. When it is ready it will be warm to the touch, but solid. If the plaster is ready you can pick up the cookie cutter, and push the plaster mold through, being careful not to break the mold.

Use an paper towel or old cloth to remove any dirt and mud from the mold. When cleaned off you should have a perfect imprint that kids will love.
