This amazing activity is a great follow up to reading the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.  Most children are familiar with the tale, but partnering the book with this activity will take your lesson to the next level.  Have children grow their own beanstalks and watch as it grows to the castle in the sky.

How to; Jack and the Beanstalk Craft

To prep print out the castle in the sky pdf.  Make sure you have enough castles for each child taking part in the activity.  Then give each child a castle, scissors, glue, a cotton ball and a wooden skewer.  Have the children cut out the castle and glue it to the non pointy end of the skewer.

Next have them take the cotton ball and pull it apart just slightly so it resembles a cloud. Have the kids use a glue stick and rub it around the skewer just under the castle.  Have the children hold the cotton ball to the glue.  Hold the cotton ball in place for a few minutes to ensure it is secure.

After the castle in the sky is complete, hand out a cup to each child.  Give them each two broad bean to put in the bottom of their cup. Travel around to each child with a bag of soil and a gardening shovel.  Have each kid scoop out a good amount of soil and place it into their cup covering the broad beans.

Have the kids water their Jack and the Beanstalk Craft.  Then stick their castle in the sky pointy end down into the dirt.

Allow the beanstalk to grow for a few days, monitor its progress and watch as “Jack’s beanstalk” moves its way up to the clouds and to the castle in the sky.
