Supplies

  • Paper or Styrofoam cup
  • Push Pin
  • Flashlight
  • Markers or pencil

Preparation

Find a flashlight and some paper cups.  The flashlight should be a good quality light. The paper cups need to be large enough to fit around the lighted end of the flashlight but not so large that the flashlight does not fit snuggly. You will need at least one cup per child.

Create the Flashlight Art Design

Give each kid a paper or Styrofoam cup. Have each child sketch out a flashlight art design on the bottom of their cup.  They may be interested in making shapes, letters, or their own beautiful designs. Whatever they chose to create it should use the entire bottom of the cup and should not have to much detail.  A simple shape or design is perfect.

When children have finished their flashlight art design sketch give them a push pin.  Remind them that a push pin is sharp and it will hurt if they poke themselves with it.  Have them place the cup flat on the table and carefully poke the push pin through each dot on the bottom of the cup. The holes should be places close together but not so close that they touch.

If you are working with young kids it maybe a good idea to do this step for the kids to prevent any accidents or injuries.  You can have them draw small dots on their design where they want the holes to be located and you can poke the holes for them.

Have a Flashlight Art Show

When everyone has finished their project, turn off the lights and prepare for a flashlight art show.  Take the children’s cups one at a time and hold it over the end of the flashlight. Turn on the flashlight and display the art on the way.  Go through each cup one by one. Kids will love to see their artwork lit up on the wall in a unique display of creativity.
