Set-Up

I like to do this activity with limited supplies, so I create a price sheet of the items available and give each group a set amount of “money” to purchase supplies.

Before starting this activity create a ramp that leads into a wall or the ground. You can use a large cardboard box or a tipped up table, whatever you have around.

The Egg Mobile Challenge

Give each group or child an egg, four wheels and their “money”. Tell them that the egg is raw.  Explain that it is there job to keep that egg safe. If the egg breaks they will have a mess to clean up and will lose the challenge.  Then show them the ramp. You can get the wheels at any craft store. I found good deal on a set of 24 wheels on Amazon. Click here to see the current price .

Kids will build a car using the “money” to buy supplies, the car must hold the egg and the challenge is to make it safe enough that when the egg crashes into the ground or the wall it does not crack or break.

Give the kids a 15-30 minutes to develop a design and build their cars. When everyone has finished their cars gather everyone around the ramp. Take turns crashing the cars by rolling them down the ramp into a wall or the ground. Check the eggs after each run to see if the car prevented the egg from cracking.

Have you tried the Hot Air Mobile Challenge? This challenge is less messy than Egg Mobiles but offers similar critical thinking challenges that get kids working together and problem solving.

My Experience

Kids love this activity, it’s a great team building project that requires cooperation and critical thinking. Plus it’s messy! Kids can easily spend 45 minutes crafting their cars.  If a lot of eggs survive you can make the ramp higher to add another element of challenge.
